A picture is worth 1,000 words, right? Some days we’re all out of words. Do you have any words left?

These two brown Chinese goslings owe their lives to the mother and daughter who stepped in. Thanks to them, these two babies are safe at CWR.

Kudos to This Costco in Orlando Park, IL for blocking off a section of the busy parking lot to accommodate a momma goose who is nesting nearby. Thank you @costco
It’s #FiveDollarFriday and you have a limited time opportunity to turn your $5 into $10 for the animals!! An anonymous donor has pledged $10,000 to the rescue. If you donate any time over the next two weeks, your contribution will be doubled dollar-for-dollar, which means CWR will receive what you give + plus a match from the anonymous donor.
We have admitted over 1,400 animal patients at CWR in 2024. That number will exponentially rise over the next 4 months of summer. In 2023, from April 26 to August 26 we received 3,843 animal patients. That’s nearly 1,000 new intakes every month. We know we are about to be SWAMPED with baby birds, and we need your help. Visit the donation link in our bio to help CWR take on the summer!

#WildlifeWednesday We have received nearly 10 Eastern rat snakes tangled up in bird netting over the last week. We LOVE our reptile community and the fact that people are bringing these hurt animals to us rather than leaving them to suffer or resorting to more extreme measures (read: shoveling to death). These snakes are all untangled immediately and then placed in observation until their first shed in captivity. The netting often causes flesh wounds on the snake’s torso, resulting in upturned scales and complications with shed. Rehabbers must make sure that they can properly shed on their own before release back into the wild.
Stigma againsts snakes is very prevalent and persistent, but we strive to educate against undue harm. Fear comes from not knowing, and an easy fix to that is being open to learning! Rat snakes are eager to avoid contact with humans and are not naturally aggressive. They are skilled at climbing trees and the sides of houses to go after rodents. They share winter dens with fellow rat snakes and other snake species. Their natural predators are foxes, raccoons, owls, hawks, and humans. When frightened, a black rat snake will freeze. If harassed, a black snake will produce a foul-smelling musk that serves to deter predators.
CWR will always say ‘yes’ to snakes! We offer a humane relocation service for free in the greater Charlotte area. It is subject to the availability of volunteers, but if you ever need help with a snake around your home, please text us at (704) 286-6330. If you find a snake tangled in netting, please cut the snake out with the netting, contain it in a pillow case or other container with a sealed lid and airholes, and bring the snake to our rescue center at 5403 Poplin Rd. Indian Trail, NC 28079. Share this post!
A matching donor to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue has pledged a $10,000 match, which means they are making it possible for us to fundraise $20,000 together! Every dollar you donate up to $10K will be doubled and it will ALL go to the animals that we rescue and rehabilitate. With your blessing, we can continue providing life-saving care for native songbirds, wild waterfowl and reptiles, and domestic birds and farm animals in the Carolinas. Donate today at www.cwrescue.org/donate
Our life-saving mission needs your support. Can you help us with an item or two on our #AmazonWishList? Supplies listed on our Amazon are critical for both the medical and operational sides of Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.

#HappyEarthDay! Thank you to @earthsharenc for their continued partnership with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. Around Earth Day every year, Earth Share works to match up environmental nonprofits with local companies for a give back day. This year, team members from @ingersollrand visited CWR, bringing with them their workin’ boots and their good spirit!
This team was awesome. They spent hours working for the benefit of sick animals. They mucked out field coops, changing out old straw bedding for fresh, soft, new bedding. It was backbreaking work requiring shoveling, raking, and wheel barrowing, but they did it all with a smile on their face! We’re grateful to have shared some memories with Ingersoll Rand and Earth Share NC in honor of Earth Day 2024.
Our wildlife rescue mission depends on the philosophy that we make every day an earth day, that we take care of the planet we call home and strive to protect all of the earth’s inhabitants and preserve its habitats.
We have an incredible opportunity to make an even bigger impact on the lives of our feathered friends! Thanks to a generous donor, every dollar you donate will be matched, up to $10,000! That means your contribution goes twice as far in helping us provide care, shelter, and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned waterfowl. Let’s rally together and unlock this amazing $10k match to ensure that no bird is left behind. Every little bit counts! Donate today at cwrescue.org.
More than half of the animals who are admitted to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue owe their lives to volunteer transporters.
During this #VolunteerAppreciationWeek, our volunteer transporters should be recognized for their fearlessness, determination, adaptability, and cunning! Many volunteer transporters are also capturers, and the need they fill is a great one. When injured or orphaned animals are called into our hotline, but the caller is unable to contain and/or bring the animal to our rescue center, our volunteer transporters go out to save the day!
Their network spans the Carolinas. They drive anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours; it doesn’t matter the distance if an animal is in need. The rate at which our volunteer transporters step up to the plate and are dispatched for a rescue is phenomenal. Normally, transporters equip themselves with a dog crate and a net. Ultra seasoned transporters may bring along their own kayak as well. Anything it takes to get the job done! Sometimes a hurt animal is so elusive that it requires a CWR volunteer to go out 4 or 5 times before a successful capture. CWR volunteers face funky situations! From kayaking out on an ice-covered lake to rescue a frozen swan or trodding around the dark underground of a storm drain for trapped baby ducklings, our transporters face the most unique tasks. But they’re always up for the challenge. They think on their feet and act with their heart.
The amount of animals who would go without help if not for the CWR capture and transport team would be devastating. Imagine, distressed geese struck by vehicles on the side of the road, crying baby birds who’ve fallen from nests, panicked herons who have swallowed fishing line, lying in wait for hours or days. When elderly or disabled bird owners can no longer care for their flock and they have no family to call, it is CWR volunteer transporters who round up birds on their behalf and bring them in. CWR transport volunteers have been known to clear their whole day’s schedule just for the rescue of one bird!
We admire our transporters very much, more than we can put into words. THANK YOU TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS 💛.
April’s open volunteer project weekend at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue had such a nice turnout that we’re going ahead and scheduling a May work day for Saturday, May 4th! These monthly project days are open to the general public, and we are going to try to maintain a regular schedule of the first Saturday of every month, from 10 AM to 4 PM.
The project this time will be fencing in a field to enlarge the grazing pasture that our birds have access to. Make sure to wear comfy clothes, closed-toed boots, and be ready to work but also have fun. Thank you to everyone who came out in April. Hope to see you again in May!
Email volunteer@cwrescue.org to receive volunteer paperwork if this is your first time volunteering with us, or you may complete paperwork when you arrive for the project day on Saturday, May 4. Let us know you’re interested with a comment below or an email sent to the inbox mentioned above!
Please consider joining the CWR Transport page! Currently, there are 30 plus animals waiting for our help. Animals die just waiting to get here, and because their feet can’t reach the pedals, they rely on hoomans!
Plus, this is a very flexible position!
How does it work? You register with your home address (kept between you and our coordinator; not made public), and if an animal in need is in your area, you’ll be tagged in a post. If you have the time and want to get involved that day, you simply bring the animal to us. If it’s an animal surrender, there’s one piece of paperwork the owner needs to complete (which we’ll give you).
Sometimes, the animals are already in boxes waiting for you, and sometimes you need to capture them. But either way, you decide if you want to go out and get it. Oftentimes, several volunteers work together to capture if needed.
Sometimes, our animals need a lift to other centers like Skywatch, etc, and you can opt in for those as well, if a beach vacation is in your near future.
If you want to join, go to the CWR Transports page at facebook.com/groups/CWRTransports/ and ask to join. Follow the steps, and we’ll get you approved!
The smell of freshly diced bell pepper and chopped cilantro, some juicy tomatoes spilling over the top of the cutting board… who’s busy behind the board at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue?
During this #VolunteerAppreciationWeek, we can say with certainty that our produce pickup and produce prep volunteers are the animals’ favorites! CWR produce volunteers keep our fridge stocked with goodies for the animals, and they also raid our fridge for the animals. They are the most patient and the most precise. Shifts consist of sorting through the day’s produce donations, taking the time to meticulously chop buckets and buckets worth of fruits and vegetables into bite-size pieces, storing what’s not used, and cleaning off their workspace after. The final gratifying act comes during feeding time 😁. After their fingers are cramping, their arms are aching, and their nostrils are filled with the aroma of kale and carrots, CWR produce volunteers walk outside shaking their salad buckets, a beckoning call to all the animals!
Produce volunteers are swarmed with adoring fans. They sprinkle some salad here, some there, and a line of ducks, geese, and chickens feast on the buffet. CWR remains so grateful to our produce volunteers. Without them, we wouldn’t have fresh produce to enrich these animals’ lives. Not only is it nutrionally beneficial, it’s mentally stimulating, emotionally fulfilling, and socially encouraging. Newer animals learn from crowds of older residents; they learn that people aren’t to be feared and that the food is plentiful! For many of these animals, it’s a new experience.
CWR produce volunteers come face-to-face with some really smelly, soggy, rotting vegetables! They clean dishes, they go out in the sun and rain, and it’s not always glamorous. But, they do it because they know the difference they are making in an animal’s day. They become celebrities around the sanctuary, for humans and animals alike. THANK YOU PRODUCE VOLUNTEERS 💙.
Visit us at Panzú Brewery in Mint Hill tomorrow Sat. April 20 from 3:30 PM! Listen to some live music and buy a beer that you know is benefitting charity. $1 from every pint will be donated to CWR from Panzú. Cheers all! 🍻
