Adoption inquiries are handled via email only. Our hotline is reserved for urgent animal needs.

Adoptions are vital to our work, and we carefully match each animal to a home that fits their needs. Please be patient—approvals can take several weeks, and applications are processed in the order they are completed.

We’re in the process of rebuilding our Care Guides (under the Animal tab) to provide the most accurate, helpful information for each species. Check back often as we add new guides and updates to help you give your pets the best care possible.

ADOPTION APPLICATION

This is to be completed in entirety by the intended adopter. There must be something in each field or the application will not be saved. Three references are requested to conclude the application. We also require photos of the setup where adopted animal(s) will live; this includes all types of enclosures, enclosed ponds, netted aviaries, etc.

These photos must be emailed to adopt@cwrescue.org as the last step of your application.

Adoption fees help cover medical care, feeding, and supplies. Fees are adjustable for multiple adoptions.

Predator protection is required; we can provide guidance to qualify your setup.

Birds are not adopted for breeding or resale. Social media promoting breeding/sales will disqualify applicants.

Special needs birds are discussed in advance. All birds are cleared by a licensed rehabilitator or veterinarian.

Birds require proper nutrition (e.g., Mazuri Waterfowl Diet); chicken feed or corn is not sufficient.

Not all birds suit every situation; we will suggest only birds that will thrive in your setup.

Birds must be picked up at CWR; bring covered carriers or kennels. We do not loan crates.

ADOPTION FAQs

  • Please complete the adoption application in full. Every question serves a purpose, and incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Applications may be submitted by email, fax, mail, or picked up in person at the rescue. We do not share your information; it is used solely for the adoption process and kept secure.

    We understand that sharing personal information can feel uncomfortable, but adoption requires mutual trust. For the safety of our birds, an approved application is required for all adopters—no exceptions.

  • Photos must be uploaded within the application prior to submission. Photos must include the housing you have for the birds and other living quarters they will have, such as a pond or grazing areas. If you experience difficulty adding your pictures to the application, you can email them to adopt@cwrescue.org with the animal(s) you are applying for and your name.

  • After you submit your application, it is sent to our adoption coordinator and you will receive a confirmation. Review typically takes about two weeks but may be shorter or longer depending on volume. If it has been more than two weeks, you may email adopt@cwrescue.org for a status update.

    If approved, you will be contacted to discuss available birds. We do not hold birds; placements are first-come, first-served for approved adopters, and availability can change daily. If additional information is needed, we will reach out. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or followed up on.

  • Please apply only if you are prepared to pay the adoption fee, which helps cover the cost of care and ensures you can meet your animal’s ongoing needs. Reduced or negotiated fees for group adoptions must be arranged in advance.

    Please arrive prepared to pay the agreed fee and bring appropriate transport crates. Volunteers cannot change fees or adoption terms at pickup, and incomplete paperwork or payment will result in no adoption that day. We are happy to work with reasonable requests when discussed ahead of time.

  • Your time is valuable, and so is ours. Please let us know if you can’t make your appointments at least 1 day in advance by emailing adopt@cwrescue.org. If you miss your appointment and you don’t email to let us know, then we reserve the right to halt all adoption approval for you.

  • If your application is approved but no suitable birds are currently available, you may be placed on a waiting list. When a matching bird becomes available, we will make one attempt to contact you before moving to the next approved adopter.

    Waiting list notifications are limited to approved applicants, and we may also contact previous adopters. We prioritize established relationships to ensure the best outcomes for our animals.
